A little history
The distinguishing characteristic of the inhabitants of this region was, for centuries, the practice of transporting goods, known as roulage, which was passed down from father to son in the families of Grandvalliers (inhabitants of the Grandvaux). The rouliers of Grandvalliers were known throughout France. They were, in a sense, the forerunners of today's lorry drivers. Every year, in autumn, they set off along roads and tracks in small convoys of carts pulled by a single horse. They carried local produce, timber, pine logs, cheeses and goods produced in Saint-Claude.
