Raon-l'Étape (pronounced [ʁɑ̃ letap] or [ʁaɔ̃ letap]) is a French commune situated in the département des Vosges, in Lorraine, in the administrative region of Grand Est. Its inhabitants are called the Raonnais(es).
A little history
The town of Raon was founded in the 13th century on the old field of Rua, close to la Plaine and the Meurthe, dominated by the château de Beauregard, a château rebuilt and embellished by Ferry III, duc de Lorraine. This land was situated within the jurisdiction of the Abbaye Saint-Hydulphe de Moyenmoutier. The duc de Lorraine, appointed protector of this abbey, controlled the passage points for salt and wheat towards the mountains and imposed his toll rights and his protections near the voie des Saulniers, the trading route then most frequently used to cross the massif towards Saales and Sélestat. The ducal foundation served an objective of economic development.
