Mirecourt, the town

Mirecourt ([miʁkuʁ], in Vosgien de la montagne [miʁko]) is a French commune, chef-lieu de canton of the département des Vosges in the arrondissement de Neufchâteau. Located in Lorraine, the commune is today part of the administrative region of Grand Est. Its inhabitants are known as the Mirecurtiens.

A little history

Mirecourt was founded during the first millennium, at the crossroads of the roads leading from Toul to Épinal and from Neufchâteau to Châtel-sur-Moselle, at the crossing of the Madon. The first mention of Mirecourt dates from 960, in an act of Emperor Othon II stipulating that a man named Urson had donated a substantial estate situated in Murici Curte. During the course of the 13th century, it formed part of the seigneurial domain of the comte-évêque de Toul, who granted it letters of franchise in 1234. An act of 1284 (Ferry III) records the attachment of Mirecourt and its territory to the duché de Lorraine.
