Liffol-le-Grand is a French commune situated in the département of Vosges, in the Grand Est region. The town is known for its chair and period furniture industry (the Liffol chair). Its inhabitants are called the Liffolois.
A little history
The place of Liffol is mentioned for the first time by the continuator of Frédégaire under the name of Latofao (596) and Lucofao (680). These are two battles from the Merovingian era, which are said to have taken place on the territory of the communes that today bear the name of Liffol-le-Grand and Liffol-le-Petit, between Austrasians and Neustrians. However, these events, recognised by historians, are highly controversial when it comes to the place where they occurred, as some situate them at Laffaux, between Laon and Soissons in the Aisne, while others place them at Liffol in Lorraine. At the time of the first battle, in 596, two other historical events had previously taken place in the region.
