Le Thillot [lə tijo] is a French medium-altitude mountain commune situated in the département des Vosges as well as in the massif of the same name, in the Grand Est region. It lies at the heart of the valley of the Haute Moselle. It is, along with Ramonchamp and Rupt-sur-Moselle, the central town of a small conurbation of nearly 15,000 inhabitants, which also comprises Bussang, Ferdrupt, Fresse-sur-Moselle, Le Ménil and Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle.
A little history
The history of the town is dominated by a strong industrial tradition, with copper mines from the 16th century onwards, a tinplate manufactory from 1727, tanneries and more. It was in a copper mine at Le Thillot that the first use of black powder in Europe for the extraction of ore was attested in 1617, thanks to the archaeological work carried out by the Société d'étude et de sauvegarde des anciennes mines (SESAM) in these mines since 1987. Around 1850, textiles began to establish themselves in the valley of the Moselle under the impetus of entrepreneurs who were predominantly Alsatian.
