A little history
The origins of Sanctivagium, altered in medieval Latin to the form Stivagium, then Estival in Old French, go back to the middle of the 7th century. It was the wish of Leudinus Bodo, patron of the ban d'Estival and known by the name of saint Bodon or saint Leudin, to erect and populate a monastery in the valley at some distance from an island on the Meurthe named Chiarafontana, which became Clairefontaine. It is not known whether he succeeded. Etival is the western branch of the "croix monastique des Vosges", formed by the abbeys of Saint-Dié to the south, Senones to the east, Bonmoutier to the north and Moyenmoutier at the centre.
