Étais-la-Sauvin is a French commune situated in the département of Yonne in Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. It benefits from a balanced climate between the humidity and coolness of the Puisaye, close to the val de Loire, and the warm, humid air coming from the south of the upland Morvan. For a long period, the commune was known for being home to one of the finest rose gardens in Bourgogne, considered the third finest rose garden in France.
A little history
The very first village situated on the Montivieux is thought to be of Celtic origin, dating from the period between the 6th and 5th centuries BC. It was the Boïen people, originally from Bohemia (present-day Czech Republic). The name of the lieu-dit Montivieux appears on the Cassini maps (18th century). This name comes from the expression Montil viel, meaning old small mount, or Montivium in Latin.
