Doudeville is a French commune situated in the Seine-Maritime département, in the Normandie region. Known as the capital of cultivated flax, it is situated in the centre of the pays de Caux, a place founded on chalk, and is very well known for its blue fields of flax in flower.
A little history
In January 1817, there was a subsistence crisis, grain was in short supply and its price was rising. At the market, a riot broke out pitting the mayor and farmers selling their wheat against starving inhabitants. To restore order, the intervention of the garde nationale, the gendarmerie and even the army was required (légion de l'Aisne garrisoned at Le Havre). The soldiers fired into the crowd and killed 3 people and wounded 15 or 16.
