The region has numerous traces of occupation from prehistoric, pre-Celtic, Celtic and Gallo-Roman periods, including caves, standing stones and, most notably, the oppidum of mont Lassois, an important Bronze Age settlement centre currently the subject of research and excavations, situated 6 km from the town. The Gaulish people who occupied the region at the time of the Roman invasion, the Lingons, quickly embraced colonisation, and Châtillon, one of the three strongholds (Castell) of their Lassois territory, appears to have already stood at a strategic crossroads of numerous routes.
