Located 45 kilometres south of Dijon and 150 km north of Lyon, it is the sub-prefecture of the arrondissement de Beaune. In 2023, the population of Beaune was 20,352 inhabitants, making it the second largest commune in la Côte-d'Or.
A little history
The franchise charter of the commune of Beaune grants its inhabitants rights and privileges. Eudes III, duc de Bourgogne, allowed Beaune to exist as an autonomous institution from 1203, modelled on Dijon. This charter is held at the Archives municipales de Beaune. In 1422, Nicolas Rolin became chancellor to the duc de Bourgogne Philippe le Bon.
