A little history
The Latin origin of the name Châtenois, Castinetum, which means chestnut tree, bears witness to the existence of the town in the Gallo-Roman period. Châtenois was a stronghold from the 11th century. Gérard d'Alsace made it the first capital of the duché de Lorraine in 1048. Châtenois was at that time a landgraviate.
