A little history
On 4 November 1493, during his second voyage, Christophe Colomb landed near the mouth of the river du Grand Carbet where Carib Indians had established a village. When the crew came ashore to take on water after such a long voyage, the indigenous people were frightened and fled. Eight of them, including six women, were captured. It was only after they had been offered gifts that they were released. The following day, Colomb is said to have anchored at the spot corresponding to Sainte-Marie near the mouth of the river de Sainte-Marie.
