Bussang (Büssingen in German) is a French mountain commune situated in the département des Vosges, in the Grand Est region. It is the highest commune in the valley of the Haute Moselle, where the river has its source (715 m). It forms part of the massif des Vosges.
A little history
The upper valley of the Moselle was used by the Roman road linking Metz to Bâle. Bussang and Saint-Maurice-sur-Moselle were grouped together under the name of Visentine until 1420, a name the parish retained until its division in 1767. A residence of the counts of Ferrette, then of the Habsbourg, the château d'Engelbourg controlled the commercial route over the col du Bussang. In February 1856, sisters from the convent of Saint-Esprit de Rouceux, who had come in response to a cholera epidemic, founded a hospice to take in the elderly and orphans.
