Bouillante (in Guadeloupe Creole, Bouyant) is a French commune, situated in the DOM-ROM archipelago of Guadeloupe. The commune is notable for the Cousteau reserve at Malendure and the Bouillante geothermal power station, which is one of the two geothermal power stations in France. Its inhabitants are called les Bouillantais and les Bouillantaises.
A little history
Bouillante is one of the first communes to have been settled by the French in Guadeloupe, in 1638, three years after the landing of the first colonists at the pointe Allègre in 1635 and two years after the founding of the neighbouring commune of Vieux-Habitants in 1636. The population at that time consisted of a few families. In November 1865, the cholera epidemic that had been affecting the island for several months reached Bouillante and over the course of six months caused more than two hundred deaths, representing approximately 10% of the municipal population at the time. The town hall was built in 1886 on the model of a maison haut-et-bas.
