A little history

In the midst of the war of succession for the leadership of Aquitaine, around 855, Rodolphe de Turenne, Archbishop of Bourges, who had rallied to the "legitimist" cause embodied by Charles le Chauve, was determined to establish a monastic foundation on his family lands. After a fruitless attempt at Végennes, he turned his attention to Vellinus. The cartulary of the abbey records that, struck by the splendour of the place, he could not resist naming it "Bellus Locus". From the great abbey of Solignac, he sought the dispatch of a team of monks tasked with establishing this new monastery and contributed, together with his extended family, to building up the abbey's heritage.
