Basse-Terre, the town

Basse-Terre (in Guadeloupean Creole, Bastè) is a French commune, situated in the department of Guadeloupe, on the leeward coast of the island of Basse-Terre, of which it is the chief town. The principal administrative centre of the island, Basse-Terre is home to the prefecture, the conseil régional, the conseil général, the diocese of Guadeloupe, the palais de justice and the court of appeal of the archipelago. It is one of the central towns of a conurbation of more than 51,000 inhabitants, inhabitants known as the Basse-Terriens, the unité urbaine de Basse-Terre.
A little history
The site was a village of indigenous horticulturalists and potters. Indeed, the abundance of fresh water, carried by around ten ravines and three rivers (the rivière du Galion, the rivière aux Herbes and the rivière des Pères), is one of its natural assets that encouraged human settlement well before the arrival of the French. Excavations in the town centre carried out in 2000-2001 revealed the presence of an ancient indigenous village dating from the 1st to the 5th century.
