A little history
Auxonne does not truly appear in history through written records until the end of the 12th century. However, the site of Auxonne, well protected by the Saône, a peaceful, life-giving and protective river, and the marshes that once occupied the "Granges", has left some traces of human occupation. Objects discovered during dredging of the river have not made it possible to determine the role played by the crossing of the Saône at the various periods of prehistory, but these objects are evidence of a distant human occupation dating back to the Neolithic period and which continued into the Celtic and Gallo-Roman eras. The quantities of objects found attest that a small town existed on this site.
