With an altitude ranging from 246 to 613 metres, it lies on the edge of the massif du Jura, at the heart of the Jurassian vineyard and at the entrance to a reculée enclosed by steep cliffs.
A little history
The history of Arbois begins well before the first written accounts, with traces of human occupation dating back to the Palaeolithic. The oldest traces of occupation in the Arbois region date from the final Palaeolithic, that is to say approximately 12,300 to 9,700 BC. Excavations carried out at the ZAC de l'Ethole led to the discovery of lithic tools, principally made of flint, used by the hunter-gatherers of that era to capture large herbivores such as aurochs and deer.
