Viry-Châtillon (pronounced [viʁi ʃat̪ijɔ̃]) is a French commune situated twenty-one kilometres south of Paris in the département of l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. Shared estates passed between illustrious families, Viry-sur-Orge, the agricultural market town situated on the road from Paris to Fontainebleau, and Châtillon-sur-Seine, a village on the banks of the river, merged in 1790. Endowed in the 19th century with the gare de Viry-Châtillon on the new line from Villeneuve-Saint-Georges to Montargis, the commune welcomed the world's first organised aerodrome in 1909.
