Saulieu is a French commune situated in the département of Côte-d'Or in the région of Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and a member of the parc naturel régional du Morvan. In bourguignon-morvandiau, it is referred to as Saûyeu. Its inhabitants are called the Sédélociens.
A little history
The territory of the commune was inhabited as early as the Gallo-Roman period, as attested by the engraved steles and tombs found on the hills overlooking the present-day town, as well as the inscription of its name on the Table de Peutinger. In the 12th and 13th centuries, the feudal family of Saulieu, vassals of the bishops of Autun, governed the town. Guillaume Ier ruled around 1147 as a knight. Guillaume II ruled around 1198 as a knight, seigneur de Montbroin, vicomte and mayor of Saulieu. Geoffroy ruled around 1252 as a knight, vicomte and mayor of Saulieu. Then Guillaume III ruled around 1276 as a knight, vicomte and mayor of Saulieu.
