Perpignan (in Catalan, Perpinyà) is a commune in the south of France, prefecture of the département des Pyrénées-Orientales and the fourth most populous town in the région Occitanie. From a historical and cultural standpoint, the commune, a former continental capital of the kingdom of Majorque, lies in the Roussillon, a former part of the principauté de Catalogne (1173–1659) and then a province of the kingdom of France, which existed from 1659 until 1790 and covered the three vigueries of Roussillon, Conflent and Cerdagne. Exposed to a Mediterranean climate, it is drained by the Basse and the Têt.
