Palaiseau (pronounced [palɛzo]) is a French commune situated eighteen kilometres south-west of Paris, sub-prefecture of the département of Essonne, in the Île-de-France region. A royal domain in the 6th century and again in the 18th century on the important road from Chartres to Paris, the commune developed strongly from the 19th century onwards with the arrival of the railway. Palaiseau then became a holiday destination, and writers such as George Sand, Alexandre Dumas and Charles Péguy built their villas and small châteaux near the stations.
