A little history
On 8 February 1900, during the first general strike by agricultural workers which had begun on 5 February, Le François was the scene of a shooting that left ten people dead and twelve seriously injured. The soldiers are said to have fired without warning and without any order from the mayor or the commissioner, who were in negotiations with the crowd of demonstrators. This shooting is known as the Fourmies martiniquais.
