Val-d'Isère is a French commune in the département of Savoie and the region of Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes. A small high-mountain village in the massif de la Vanoise in Haute-Tarentaise, isolated in particular during periods of snow throughout its past, Val-d'Isère became, thanks to the development of leisure skiing from the 1930s onwards, a winter sports resort whose renown has made it one of the world capitals of skiing. At the sites of la Daille (the Oreiller-Killy run, known as "O.-K.") and the face de Bellevarde, it hosts Alpine ski World Cup events every year (the Critérium de la première neige since 1955).
