It extends across the foothills of the Pyrénées mountain range, principally within the valley of the gave de Pau. The medieval town developed on a rocky promontory (Cité), overlooking the gave to the south, and is bounded by the ruisseau du Lescourre to the north and by the plain of Pont-Long.
