Bien qu'il soit probable que des gisements de minerai de fer aient été exploités de longue date dans la commune, l'histoire du Boulay n'est bien documentée qu'à partir du milieu du XIIe siècle. À cette époque s'y établit un prieuré de moniales bénédictines qui se trouvait auparavant à la limite entre Le Boulay et Château-Renault.
