Bonifacio (in Bonifacian, Bunifazziu, in Corsican, Bunifaziu) is a French commune situated in the departmental constituency of Corse-du-Sud and the territory of the collectivité de Corse. It belongs to the former piève de Bonifacio, of which it was the chief town.
A little history
The origin of the current town of Bonifacio is not precisely known, but approximate dates indicate its re-founding between 828 and 833 by Boniface II de Toscane, who gave it its current name. The documented history of Bonifacio goes back to 1195, but the town was colonised by the Genoese, who imposed significant structural military modifications on the town and created the current citadel.
