It is the chief town of the arrondissement d'Avignon and the prefecture of the département du Vaucluse, in the north-west of the région Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur, as well as the seat of the council of the communauté d'agglomération du Grand Avignon. Nicknamed the « cité des papes » owing to the installation in the town of seven popes then two antipopes from 1309 to 1423 and the fact that it remained in the possession of the Papal States until 1790, the renown of Avignon also comes from its bridge and its preserved fortifications.
