Athis-Mons (pronounced [at̪is mɔ̃s]) is a French commune situated twelve kilometres south of Paris in the département of l'Essonne in the Île-de-France region. Originally two separate agricultural villages on the hillsides of the Seine and the Orge, Athis-sur-Orge and Mons-sur-Orge, lordships of illustrious figures, the merger in 1817 created Athis-Mons, a new commune which developed rapidly with the arrival of the railway and then the airport, first becoming urbanised with suburban houses and then through housing estates and large residential blocks.
