A little history
The commune of Matoury was part of the former quartier du Tour-de-L'Isle, founded in 1656. A church was built there in 1662 and placed under the protection of saint Michel. In 1736 the governor Lamirande, owner of a fine property between Cayenne and Matoury, began the digging of the crique Fouillée linking the Mahury and the rivière de Cayenne. This canal was intended to create a link between Cayenne, Cabassou, Rémire-Montjoly and Roura.
